Locators & Types of Locators

 Locator:

            Locators are the elements or devices used in jigs and fixtures to accurately position and locate a workpiece at a predetermined position relative to the cutting tool or machine. They restrict the movement of the workpiece in one or more directions and ensure that the workpiece is placed in the correct and repeatable position during machining. In simple words, A locator is a device that establishes the correct position of a workpiece in a jig or fixture by restricting its unwanted movement.


Main Functions of Locators are:

  • Accurately position the workpiece.
  • Prevent unwanted movement of the workpiece.
  • Ensure repeatability and accuracy of machining.
  • Establish a fixed reference or datum.
  • Reduce setting and loading time.
  • Maintain consistent dimensional accuracy from one workpiece to another.

1. Flat Locator:

          A flat locator is a flat or plane surface used to locate a workpiece by contacting one of its flat surfaces. It restricts movement in the required direction and provides a simple and stable reference for positioning the workpiece.

2. Cylindrical Locator:

          A cylindrical locator is used to locate a workpiece having a cylindrical hole or surface. A cylindrical pin fits into the hole and accurately fixes the position of the workpiece, mainly restricting its lateral movement.

3. Conical Locator:

          A conical locator has a tapered or conical shape and is used to locate workpieces having holes or circular features. Its tapered surface provides accurate centering and helps compensate for small variations in hole size.

4. Jackpin Locator:

          A jackpin locator consists of an adjustable pin supported by a threaded mechanism. It is used to support and locate irregular or uneven workpieces, and its height can be adjusted according to the workpiece surface.

5. Drill Bush Locator:

          A drill bush locator uses a hardened bush to guide the drill and simultaneously help locate the workpiece. It is commonly used in drilling jigs to maintain accurate hole position and prevent drill deflection.

6. Fixed V-Locator:

          A fixed V-locator has a fixed V-shaped groove used to locate cylindrical or round workpieces. The workpiece rests in the V-groove, which provides stable positioning and restricts movement in two directions.

7. Sliding V-Locator:

          A sliding V-locator has a V-shaped locating block that can slide or be adjusted according to the workpiece. It is useful for locating cylindrical workpieces of different sizes while allowing easy loading and unloading.

          An outside pin locator uses pins that contact the outer surface of a workpiece to establish its position. It is useful when the workpiece does not have a suitable hole or internal feature for locating.
